When a covered appliance is replaced, the new one has to be installed, but the old one has to leave the house before that can happen. The removal step is easy to overlook because it sits between the repair visit and the install, and it is often where a homeowner ends up paying for work they assumed was included.

Split the removal into separate jobs

Treat removal as a set of jobs and assign each one on paper: disconnecting the old unit, carrying it out of the house, hauling it away and disposing of it, and repairing any floor, wall, or doorframe that gets scraped on the way out. A unit that is gas-fed, plumbed, or built into cabinetry usually needs a licensed tradesperson to disconnect it. A plain freestanding unit may only need a helper and a dolly.

Questions to ask before anyone lifts

Ask the company, in writing, whether removal is part of the covered replacement or a separate job. Ask whether the technician who installs the new unit also removes the old one, or whether another crew comes out. Ask who is responsible if the old unit is damaged, or damages a wall, during the carry. Ask whether disposal is included, and if it is not, whether a local hauling rule limits what can be taken away and on which days.

Keep the answers with the rest of your contract papers. A verbal assurance from a dispatcher is not the same as a line on the work order, and the work order is the document you will point to if the removal goes wrong.

If you move the old unit yourself

Decide who will shut off the power, water, or gas before the day arrives, and get that person's name and license details in advance. Measure the doorways, stairs, and hallways on the carry route, and confirm the unit fits through each one at its widest and tallest point. Take photographs of the removal path before and after, so you have a record if a floor or wall gets marked.

If you hire the removal out

Ask for proof of insurance that covers property damage, and ask for an itemized quote that lists removal separately from installation. Confirm the arrival window and get it written on the same order as the install. The job is only finished when the old unit is gone and the new one is running, so ask for both to be confirmed in one document.
